Ray - I agree that when you are involved with a production, your whole world changes (some times just a bit, some times in big ways.) I find myself thinking in two minds - my own and that of my character. Some times those thoughts can be very different - kind of like traveling in a foreign country and learning profound things about yourself and your world.
I believe it was Mary who posed the question on how seeing yourself on magazine covers and in the media has to affect actors/public figures. My guess - is deeply. Or they have to learn to block certain parts of themselves.
One thing I picked up years ago was mask making. I have conducted several workshops in the basic techniques and used them in self discovery workshops as well. There is something amazing that happens even still to me when I am under the process of masking my face. I go to a very deep place. It's quiet, it's restricted but not threatening. And it so amazing to look at the result --- a copy of your face looking back at you. I guess that like journaling, it is another mirror. And it is even more interesting if I plan "a look" that I want to capture and study ---- what do I look like when I have an angry face, a scared face, a tired face.
