Hello to everyone and hi to Mary! Kumusta? You know, it's funny how any kind of interaction can feed one's deepest thoughts for a great journal entry. Just running into another person of Filipino heritage made me think about identity. For anyone and everyone, what does identity mean to you? For example:
I was born and raised in Toronto, ON, Canada, and my parents are from the Philippines. I never learned to speak their language fluently. I'm actually better at French than of the Filipino language. However, I still feel a sense in kinship when I meet someone with the same background. On the other hand, when I was a child, I would be embarassed by my father ordering from a menu in a nice restaurant because his accent was so thick. Does the same apply for someone whose ancestors immigrated to America from Ireland? How Irish do you feel you are? How American do you feel you are? Is there a push and pull?
What is your identity?
