Karaite Korner Newsletter #318
Expected New Moon Sightings 2008-2009
The list of expected sightings of the new moon over the next biblical
year has now been published at:
http://www.karaite-
(towards the middle of the page)
The list contains the Gregorian dates for "potential visibility", that
is, when the moon will be visible providing there are no clouds.
According to the "potential visibility" system New Moon day is still
observed when the moon is not sighted due to clouds. This year, three
new moons cannot be predicted with 100% certainty and in these months
we use the ancient system of "raw 30-day sighting". In the "raw 30-day
sighting" system we look for the moon at the end of the 29th day of
the lunar month and if it is sighted then that evening begins the new
month; if the moon is not sighted at the end of the 29th day then the
next evening is automatically the beginning of the lunar month whether
or not there are clouds.
