I have written to myself (diary or journalling) for the last 35 years. I don't know if it is a diary or a journal, but it is the most valuable tool I've found for getting out the emotions, preserving the moments, witnessing the reasons for decisions (relationships and others) and acknowledging my being.
I work with college students and even though my profession is in the event coordination of performing arts, I always seem to be a counselor on the side. I am also an ordained minister (formerly married to a full time pastor). I'm not sure anyone has ever come to me for guidance that didn't get the "you need to be writting this down" suggestion. Our words are powerful - and when they are stuck in our heads, they can become overwhelming and/or confusing. When we release them to paper, we both release their hold and honor the wisdom that may have been trapped and unseen.
Where do I keep my journals? Working ones - anywhere around the house, but always one in the car or brief case for those thoughts away from home. Retired ones --- in a space where all my good friends know to go, remove the contents and burn them unseen before my family comes to claim the body. (The cats I trust with my writings - it was the former husband who was the snoop.)
A couple of years ago I was faced with a potentially deadly condition. My friends all said --- don't worry, we will take care of the cats AND we know BURN the nightstand. :)
