To this list, I would add Thomas Lynch's three
non-poetry books:
The Undertaking: Life Studies from the Dismal Trade
Bodies in Motion and at Rest: On Metaphor and
Mortality
Booking Passage: We Irish and Americans
In that order. Thomas Lynch is a poet and it's
obvious in his use of language in these three memoirs.
I love Robert Fulghum too. I too read his work when I
need a boost, and not just with my writing. But when
I seem to be slipping down the slippery slope into
some black depression, I can always count on him to
make me laugh. I have all his books and recommend
them all.
I will have to get Prather's as I have not yet read
him. Thanks for the recommendation.
