Hey Elizabeth/Ray
I think in the past 10-20yrs there has been a higher incidence of
autism spectrum disorders in children. Some due to misdiagnosis or
other factors. I think genetics/the environment and even some types
of people are more disposed to having autism. I don't think its a
mistake that when my sister was coming up (in the 60's) she was very
hyperactive and given ritalin to help manage the hyperness and then
she has her first child yrs later in 1998 and her first child comes
up with an autism type spectrum disorder.
Maybe some types of vaccination combinations have something to do
with it also. Or maybe its because certain vaccinations are given too
close together. The list is endless on what you might be able to
point it to. I'm not sure they can ever totally pin down why certain
people are predisposed to certain conditions.
Heck when I was born my parents didn't even know that I would have
bone deformities which would lead to scoliosis and knee/leg and back
issues. Throw in an eye operation when I was 2 and having to have
braces for over 4 yrs and various other dramas. Now every few years I
get to deal with pretty bad cases of bronchitis. I've had some skin
issues and dealing with a lower than average immunity because of all
my previous operations and conditions. Don't even have me discuss how
many X-Rays and MRI's I have had. At one point a doctor thought I may
of had a brain tumour. False scare thankfully. Funny thing is now I
work in a Pharmacy and I do all I can to make certain I don't have to
take any type of medications for any reason. I rarely do even if I am
in some pain. I have a high pain tolerance so I let pain go pretty
far (for most other people's pain levels) before I give into it.
I know some school districts are better than others in caring for
children who have special needs. We are our own best resources when
it comes to getting our children or family members the care they
need. Honestly my mom was instrumental in overseeing my care. If she
didn't find Children's Hospital of Los Angeles when I was 4 I would
of wound up crippled and likely dead now because of my bone disorders
and then scoliosis would have left me unable to breathe and I would
have died. Sometimes its hard when we run into brick walls of
terrible doctors or less than caring staff members at schools.
So basically maybe someday there will be a link or cure found for
many diseases such as AIDS and Cancers and everything else...

Also I saw a medical report saying men over 40 having children
have a higher risk of having autistic children.
They haven't found one particular cause yet but I hope they find
a cure or a way to prevent it in the future. They have made so
much progress in diseases. But still no cure for aids and we
have lost so many wonderful people.

I have so many friends with autistic children. Is there a rise in
the occurance of autism, or are we just hearing more about the
situation? Is society being more open, understanding?
