Yes, wasn't that the theme of the book/TV movie of Five People You Meet in Heaven -- the central figure was introduced to people he had a major impact on, but he had no idea. We might be able to ferret out some ways that we had overlooked. As a teacher I like to think I've had some impact but that may be more hopeful than actual. It is a good thing to think about, too, as we weigh our actions and words - who is watching and picking up our words and actions even though it was not our intention. I've known more than one person who said --" having a baby in the house sure cleaned up my vocabulary." They know someone's watching. We could think about what we mean to pass along, and what we'd rather not anyone pickup. Do as I say not as I do. Students have come to me with things that never crossed my mind as I taught. Young women, who several years ago had very few women professors, would say that I inspired them to go into university teaching. They had few model good or bad in those days. Now there are lots of women professors so it's not so unusual to them. But you often don't know who is watching your life and you think you are teaching about global warming, but they are thinking - if she can do this, I can too. Jane
