I think there can be extreme bravery involved in the decision to kill one's self. Obviously, such thoughts run counter to most basic cultural teaching and beliefs, so, when a rational person is thinking, planning and deciding what to do ---- well, it's not a casual decision.
Also obvious to me is that suicide is a fairly common practice, why else would there be so much preaching against it?
Everyone dies. Why should it always be a surprise when? Or a long drawn out (often demeaning) process? Everyone has to die --- I can see that some people would chose to make their own decisions about when and how.
