I have used many things to bookmark a page. Candy wrapper, a receipt, a
dollar bill (when we still had paper dollar bills), paper clip, etc.
Buying a lot of my books at secondhand stores or garage sales I've come
across some unusual bookmarks, postcards, grocery lists, photos, but the
most unusual bookmark was a neatly folded telegram announcing a death by
drowning of a woman.
