What a reminder this is to never give in, and to show how much
a person can influence and aid us.

I suffered a stroke in 1982. It left me a bit handycapped and
speaking three-word sentences. I had seen better days.
Barb, my wife and a nurse, was the force that drove me on the path to
recovery. Of course there was the VA hospital, but they can only do
so much. Without her wisdom I would still be in that small world.
She was the one who instigated the arrival of a Time/Sinclair
computer (most of you probably never heard of it). There were times
when I wished I hadn't.
I hated it with a passion because something was wrong and it
sometimes shut off without warning, taking all my keystrokes with
it. But I was unable to keep my hands off the power switch.
Each morning after Barb left for work the silent battle resumed.
Each day was a new challenge because there was no software. The
instruction book contained a few do-nothing programs that were
entered through the keyboard, a one-finger device (one-finger because
the other hand was needed to hold the computer so it wouldn't wiggle
the power connector and shut off).
My world was one of slow motion, but "Hal" was in no hurry. He
didn't wring its virtual hands when I took too long. Instead, he
winked his cursor 3,600 times per hour while awaiting my next
keystroke.
Without Barb's encouragement and that daily computer challenge my
world might be much different today.
